Our Story

Every community is shaped by the people who choose to care for others. Susan’s Lowcountry
Non-Profit was born from that kind of care—the quiet commitment to show up for others with compassion, dignity, and faith.
The organization was founded in honor of Mrs. Susan Morgan, a woman who believed helping others wasn’t extraordinary, it was simply the right thing to do. Raised by a military veteran and a devoted nurse, Susan grew up in a home where service and compassion were simply part of everyday life.
Susan believed that faith and family were the foundation of a life well lived, and that caring for others was a calling. Even while raising her family and working full-time at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, she dedicated herself to serving others. She volunteered with the Red Cross, supported cancer care initiatives, traveled to Africa to help those in need, and faithfully served through her church and community.

She lived with the belief that everyone deserves to feel seen, supported, and loved. The lesson she passed on continues to guide us today: connection matters.

After Susan’s passing, her son Jon began visiting his father in a retirement community and saw firsthand how easily many seniors can slip into quiet isolation when visits become rare and meaningful connection fades. During one of these visits, Jon was inspired by a resident named Danny, a soon-to-be homeless disabled veteran. Jon learned that Danny, who lived on a fixed income, was being evicted from the retirement home after a $300 monthly rent increase.
At the same time, Jon reflected on his own family’s legacy of service. He had always admired his grandfathers, who both served in World War II. One served as a military police officer in the Pacific, and the other earned a Bronze Star as a member of the OSS. Their dedication to service left a lasting impression on him. In that moment, Jon knew he wanted to follow in that same spirit of service, helping not only Danny but many other seniors and veterans as well. Honoring those who served our country and caring for those who helped build our communities became deeply personal.
Inspired by his family and having met Danny and hearing his story, Jon and his wife Vanessa founded Susan’s Low Country Non-Profit to carry that spirit of compassion and servant leadership forward. Today, far too many seniors and veterans in Lowcountry communities live in isolation, with shrinking support networks and few opportunities for meaningful connection.
We exist to change that. Through day trips, shared meals, companionship programs, and supportive services, we help seniors and veterans reclaim joy, dignity, and belonging. Our mission is grounded in the belief that those who built our communities, and served our country, deserve to be seen, remembered, and celebrated.

And with the support of people like you, this story is still being written.
