Why Our Work Matters

Too many seniors and veterans are facing the hidden dangers of isolation.

Across the Lowcountry, thousands of older adults and veterans are cut off from the social connections that keep them healthy and engaged. Loneliness isn’t just a feeling, it’s a serious public health crisis.
Without regular connection and support, seniors and veterans face higher risks of depression, cognitive decline, physical health problems, and even early death. Alarmingly, adults aged 85 and older have the highest suicide rates in the country (CDC, 2023). Our programs create meaningful opportunities for engagement, companionship, and care, helping prevent the severe consequences of social isolation.
What often goes unseen is how deeply this affects daily life. Isolation doesn’t just mean being alone, it can impact emotional health, physical well-being, and a person’s sense of purpose.
For someone who once served their country, raised a family, or helped build the very communities we live in today, feeling forgotten can be one of the hardest burdens to carry. But something as simple as being included again can change everything.

  • A day spent out in the community.
  • A seat at the table with others.
  • A conversation that reminds someone they still matter.
These moments restore dignity, rebuild confidence, and create the kind of human connection every person deserves. At Susan’s Lowcountry Non-Profit, this is the work we’re committed to every day, ensuring seniors and veterans across our community remain seen, supported, and connected.
