
Raymond F. Morgan, Ed.D., was Professor Emeritus at Old Dominion University, where he
dedicated 36 years to shaping the field of reading education. During his tenure, he twice served
as Graduate Program Director for both the Master’s and Doctoral programs, mentoring and
inspiring generations of educators.
Dr. Morgan began his academic journey at Randolph-Macon College and earned his doctorate
from the University of Virginia. A respected scholar and author, he wrote 15 textbooks published
by esteemed academic presses including Harper & Row, Wadsworth, Cengage, Ginn, and
Kendall Hunt—work that has had a lasting impact on literacy education nationwide.
Throughout his career, he secured $4.5 million in federal, state, and local grant funding,
advancing research and innovation in education. He also reached thousands of students
through pioneering television and online courses, extending his influence far beyond the
traditional classroom. In recognition of his contributions, he was honored with inclusion in
Marquis Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in the World.
Above all, Dr. Morgan was a devoted husband to his loving wife, Susan, and a proud father to
his sons, Jonathan and Christopher—roles he held closest to his heart.
